An Inside Look at Avalanche Mitigation from the Alta Ski Patrol

December 29, 2020 by braveskimom

Since 1941, Alta Ski Patrol has been keeping skiers safe on some of Utah’s steepest and most beautiful skiing terrain. Their work often involves early mornings, stormy weather, and tremendous responsibility. Eighty women and men currently serve as Alta Ski Area patrollers. On big snow days, up to 60 may be working the mountain. This […]

Not The Mama: Seeing, and Skiing, is Believing in Utah

February 4, 2020 by braveskimom

By Martin Griff Thirty one years ago at age 31, I learned to ski in Park City, Utah. A group of New Jersey work colleagues invited me along. While they were more interested in me paying a share of the condo costs than joining them in downhill fun, I fooled them. For I discovered an […]

Look at a map of northern Utah and you may spot the tiny towns of Eden and Paradise. Once simply small, historic farming communities, today they are the jumping off points for one of Utah’s most unique skiing experiences. Introducing Whisper Ridge Backcountry Resort I’m certainly not the first person to tag Whisper Ridge Backcountry […]

Snowbasin Resort Avalanche Dogs Pay Their Own Way at Annual Fundraiser

May 8, 2018 by braveskimom

snowbasin, avalanche rescue dogs

It’s hard to resist an avalanche rescue dog. While some of us adore all dogs, avy dogs are special. It’s not that they are necessarily cuter or smarter than the average family pet. But they are impressively trained and their lifesaving skills increase their appeal. Here’s just one impressive statistic: One avalanche dog can cover […]

Before we arrived in @redrivernm, I’d been told Before we arrived in @redrivernm, I’d been told that the town and ski area are reminiscent of Telluride. It is true, the mountain rises steep and rugged above this old mining town. The scope and size of the resorts are different, as are the overall atmosphere and value. Red River offers outstanding New Mexico skiing. It is so fun! #localvibe #newmexicotrue #skinewmexico #redrivernm #ferastyle (and please note I’m carrying my own Covid-safe H2O) #stayhydrated

Beautifully groomed ski runs are So.Much.Fun. But Beautifully groomed ski runs are So.Much.Fun. But in many places, scoring immaculate corduroy means getting up early — just like a powder day. Not so today at @redriverskiarea in New Mexico. On the first bluebird day after a three day storm, we scored this lovely view and fast, fun snow at 2:00 pm. And no, it wasn’t a “noon groom.” Stop 2 on the Enchanted Circle. #onassignment #skinewmexico #ourredriver #redrivernm #newmexicotrue
