When I was a kid, August meant vacation. We didn’t start school until after Labor Day, when the days were noticeably shorter and the mornings were cooler. August was the month for popsicles, diving boards and a week of family fun on the road.
My kids aren’t so lucky. It isn’t a shortage of popsicles they suffer from, but rather a shorter summer. In the push to lengthen the school year, shorten the breaks between terms and somehow improve public education by throwing time at it, they go back to school in mid-August.
June…The New August?
Because my husband and I couldn’t get the August travel tradition out of our heads, for several years we scheduled our family time on top of our kids’ back-to-school picnics, orientations and meet the teacher nights. While our kids loved vacation, they didn’t like missing out on the preliminary school fun, especially if it meant they couldn’t find their desks come the first day. Now we vacation in June.
This summer, we’ve had plenty of time on the road and in the air. Two weeks in England and Ireland visiting friends and a weekend at Winter Park rolling downhill have been highlights. So have weekends at home when we’ve had time to bicycle together, hike together and relax in the backyard with books.
Where have you been and what have you done with your summer vacation? Maybe you live in the East or in California where school isn’t just right around the corner. Do you have travel plans for August?
Eucerin Travels, Too
The Eucerin Skin First Team has been busy this summer traveling along the Eastern Seaboard from Philadelphia, to NYC, to Boston with the Skin First Express sharing their skin-cancer prevention message. In addition, when they found themselves in their offices, they developed an online tool to help you Find A Dermatologist and a Skin Calculator tool to help you determine how much your skin care habits are costing you.
Thanks to Eucerin Everyday Protection SPF 30 Face Lotion this was one of the first summers I can remember when I didn’t have a sunburned nose. It helped that we vacationed in the UK and it helped that we have had an extra rainy summer at home.
But what really helped was my being more diligent about everyday sunscreen. Not just the stuff I put on when I go cycling or to the pool, but Eucerin lotions that I put on before I even go outside…and which are light enough that I can forget I have them on.

This summer my husband and I visited parts of England which included London, Bath, Salisbury, and Stonehenge. We also have taken a trip to the Gulf in Florida in the Destin area. I always have to put tons of sunscreen on whenever I am outside thanks to a genetic gift of very fair skin.

We were not able to go on vacation as I lost my job 12/31/2009, but we are fortunate to own a home at the Lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. We drive 3 hours each way almost every weekend. Being out on the lake I get wind burn, sun burn and just general dry skin. I have tried many different products to recondition my skin but have not found one that does not break me out. I would love to try Eucerin products.

This summer my two kids and I went to Pheniox Arizona for a week to see my Dad! There wasn’t a moment we didn’t wear LOTS of SPF! No one came home with a sunburn and we had loads of fun which made me a VERY happy Momma!

This summer we went to Charleston, SC, which is spectacular. We then were to go to Myrtle Beach but instead we headed south to Orlando to surprise my daughter on her birthday. On her birthday we did an eighteen hour marathon at Disney World. Started at Magic Kingdom opening at 9am with 3 parks, 3 monorail rides, 2 boat rides, 1 bus ride, 6x’s on Space Mountain, lunch at Cosmic Rays, birthday dinner in Italy, and closed the Magic Kingdom at 3 am. An unforgettable birthday for my daughter. This weekend we are going to Northern Michigan for a much needed relaxing weekend.

With my husband unemployed and me working only part time, we have not been able to get away this summer. But we have discovered so many FREE things offered in our area. It has made us aware of and grateful for the activities we can participate in. We have seen many amazing free concerts (some musice we would have never take the time to hear if our options were greater) sponsored by local suburbs. We have even seen Tim McGraw through a giveaway Goodwill and the local country radio station sponsored (make a donation and get a voucher for 2 free tickets). We have visited museums and arboretums using the free pass available at our library. And we have spent time just enjoying the sights of downtown Chicago. We were also lucky enough to be able to take advantage of some offers on Groupon, and take our children to a preformance at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and a Windy City Thunderbolts baseball game. Our teens love a trip to the thrift/resale store to find amazing and fun bargains, so we have found all kinds of kitschy fun stores. And we have had time to visit with great friends (who are also unemployed – but our schedules are finally in sinc). It is amazing to realize what is available in our own back yard, when we’re not looking farther away. It has been a much more rewarding summer than if we had taken a real vacation.

Every year, I go with 2 of my mother’s sisters (my mother is gone) and one cousin to a house we rent on Edisto Beach, SC for a week of bliss! I live in a bathing suit and read and lay out on the beach. We also have lots of good quality family time together. It’s what I look forward to each year!

I went to South Dakota over the 4th of July weekend to visit my family and celebrate my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. Since we really hadn’t had much of a summer yet in the Pacific NW, I was dilligent in putting on the sunscreen to protect my Oregon-white skin from the SD sun!
