Ski and snowboard helmets need to be replaced every few years or after a hard-knock or two. In our family, we seem to have hard knocks before we reach the helmet ”expiration” date so I am always looking for value. Which is why I’m happy to be giving away a ski helmet with Mips from Outdoor Master today.
Outdoor Master’s Diamond Ski Helmet with Mips
I found Outdoor Master last fall and it’s a good source for well-made, basic, affordable ski and snowboard essentials. I’ve tried goggles, bags, and socks, and now their top-of-the-line Diamond ski helmet with Mips.
Let’s start with Mips. Mips stands for Multi-direction impact protection system and it refers to a layer within the helmet that allows for 10-15 mm of movement upon impact, better cushioning the head from the full blunt impact of a fall or collision. The Mips layer looks like honeycomb and in some helmets you can see it through the vents.
The Outdoor Master Diamond helmet has a full layer of Mips sandwiched below the PVC shell and an EPS shock-absorbing foam layer.
Currently on sale for $99.99 (down from $149.99), the Diamond ski helmet with Mips is light and comfortable. It has removable audio-compatible plush ear pads, strap and dial adjustments, easy to open and close vents, and a basic goggle strap. In other words, it has all that you need and it comes in ten solid and combination colors. Plus, shipping is fast. My helmet came in five days, counting the weekend.
Outdoor Master also makes the Kelvin Helmet which is on sale right now for $49.99. I’ve tried Outdoor Masters goggles and they are great — plus they’ll integrate perfectly with the helmets. My only caveat is that I found the Diamond helmet ran a bit large. I measured my head and was at the bottom of the medium range, but the small actually fit best.

Ski A to Z by Kimberley Kay
While the title immediately made me think this would be a kids’ book, it is not. Instead, author and illustrator Kay has created a surprisingly comprehensive guide to the basics of skiing in just 80 pages. Full of defintitions, pro-tips, and the basics all beginners need to know, it’s a reference volume for any family discovering the joy of snowsports.
Of note, Kay is British and the book contains references to European skiing as well as a few terms that will be unfamiliar to North Americans. Of note, she indicates that ski patrol assistance requires insurance and payment. This is not generally the case in North America. While we hope you never need ski patrol, you should never hesitate to call them when needed out of concern for payment.

I love a good helmet. Not only are you protected, they keep your head warm. 🙂

Yes, yes! I agree. Was on a lift on Saturday and we saw a family with kids wearing helmets and adults wearing beanies. It was frigid and someone on the lift remarked “what are those adults thinking?” Who doesn’t want to be safe and warm?! Thanks for entering.
Richard Paschal says
Everyone needs a good helmet, and one that fits properly. When I was a kid, no one wore them. Now, those without helmets stand out in the lift line.
braveskimom says
That is so true! Maybe we are evolving… Thanks for entering!

Its high time I get a new helmet as I’ve had mine for too long – I love how warm and comfortable are (a huge difference from the headbands I grew up with… gasp! )

Time goes so quickly! I’m always amazed when I realize how old my helmet is. It’s smart to put a stick somewhere on it with the date when you got it! Good luck!

We all wear helmets in our family, they saved my son from a worse concussion than he got one year while at Heavenly.. I started wearing one after that accident..
braveskimom says
So happy your son wasn’t injured any worse than he was. It makes one thankful! Good luck!

Be SMART wear a helmet and protect the most important organ in your body!

Great reminder that helmets “time out!” I’ve had mine for a few years, but that may actually be 10!
braveskimom says
Right! When we’re having so much fun, it’s hard to remember!

I initially fought getting a helmet, but once I did, I realized I would never go back to a hat – not only are they safe, but they are warm and comfortable! This one looks great!
braveskimom says
It is a really good helmet at a good price!
Trish Mahre says
Replacement of old helmet- great idea!
braveskimom says
Gotta keep our heads safe! Good luck!
Heidi says
I’m due for an upgrade too. Remember when people used to bike AND ski without helmets?
braveskimom says
The biking is even more horrifying! Thanks Heidi!
