Favorite North American Ski Resorts for Families

November 21, 2019 by braveskimom

I often say that our family’s favorite ski area is where we’re skiing today. And I really do believe this. While the big names often get all the attention, some of our favorite places to ski fly under the radar.

Lutsen Mountain, Minnesota: If you think Minnesota is all fields of soybeans and corn and 10,000 lakes, you’re wrong. Lutsen Mountain, on the shore of Lake Superior is a fun, surprisingly extensive, ski area with over 1,000 vertical feet.

Loveland Ski Area, Colorado: If you live in Colorado or drive I-70 to the larger more famous ski resorts, you likely have passed Loveland countless times, wondering “should I stop and ski here with my kids?” The answer is yes.

Mammoth Mountain, California: While Lake Tahoe gets all the attention, Mammoth gets a lot of the snow. While Mammoth has terrain for all abilities, it’s especially appealing for families looking for challenges and endless lines on the mountain’s upper reaches.

The Big Names

Yes, we enjoy many of the big(ger) name resorts as well. Here are a few of our favorites.

Alta, Utah: Skiing Alta is a Family Tradition

Aspen Snowmass, Colorado: Three Days of Family Skiing Fun at Aspen Snowmass

Beaver Creek, Colorado: Family Skiing at Beaver Creek and Vail

Copper Mountain, Colorado: Copper Mountain, Colorado: A Top Five Family Ski Resort

Lake Louise, Alberta: An Insider’s Guide to Family Skiing at Lake Louise

Stowe Mountain Resort, Vermont: A First-Time Family Ski Guide to Stowe Mountain Resort

Home Mountains

Of course, proximity also makes the heart grow fonder, and for many skiers, favorite resorts are home or local mountains.

These are the ski areas where families ski day-in and day-out, playing hooky on powder days, and building lasting family memories year after year.

For us, that place is Powderhorn Mountain Resort in Western Colorado.

Where is it for you?

Cheers!
