Here we are in April! It’s always interesting to me both how short and how long the ski season is.
Our local mountain closed Sunday with fantastic spring conditions and much silliness. We’re not done skiing, but the season is winding down.
Years ago, I would occasionally publish collections of short reviews of products, books, services and so on, in posts titled Tight Turns. When I went back to search for them recently, I found I hadn’t done a review compilation since 2014. Again, how short and long a season and the passing of days can seem.
Anyway, two greats today: The best value goggles we’ve found and a must-read book!
Best Value Goggles from 6FiftyFive
I included these goggles (shown above) in the 2020 holiday gift guide. After a full winter of use, I’m buying them for my family and recommending them to everyone I see.
The biggest selling point for 6FiftyFive Goggles is the overall high quality versus the low price. Next up? The ability to change lenses rapidly using a strong, stable magnetic system.
Right now, they’re on sale. I just bought a pair and an extra lens for my husband for less than $100 total.
Bam!
Brave Enough by Jessie Diggins (with Todd Smith)
Whether you cross-country ski or not, Diggins’ memoir Brave Enough is a fun read.
An Olympic Gold Medalist with Kikkan Randall in the 2018 Team Sprint, Diggins clinched the overall FIS World Cup globe two weeks ago, along with the FIS World Cup Distance title, as well.
For forty years, the US Nordic women’s team struggled to reach the highest levels, but are now an international force.
Diggins, who is quickly becoming the most decorated US Nordic skier ever, unwaveringly credits her team mates, coaches, ski techs and more for her success. She also provides readers an inside look at what it takes to reach and maintain the highest levels of performance in a grueling endurance sport.
Having suffered an eating disorder as a teen, Diggins has had some major challenges along her path. This makes her story all the more interesting and relatable, even if you never have the desire to ski 30K all-out.
This book is one of my favorite reads of the year!
