No Pain, All Gain: Workout Clothes from Tommie Copper

May 19, 2014 by braveskimom

tommie copper workout clothesThis spring, I’m working out in some cute and flattering compression wear from Tommie Copper, a performance clothing company for women and men.

Thanks to Tommie Copper’s copper infused fabric, I’ve been feeling better, and looking better, than ever.

Workout Clothes that Ease the Pain

brave ski mom logoIf you’ve seen golfers wearing copper bracelets for pain relief, you may know that some people believe copper can help alleviate muscle, joint and arthritis pain.

Tommie Copper clothing is infused with high-density activated copper to help increase oxygen to muscles, neutralize free radicals and improve muscle tone. Compression helps to stabilize and support muscles, provide relief for stiff muscles and improve circulation, among other things.

I’m a skeptical person and lest you think I drank the Kool-Aid without testing the products, I’ve put some capri pants, a couple of tops, socks, ankle sleeves and my new favorite scarf through their paces.

The upshot? I think they work.

I don’t know if it’s the copper, the compression, the combo or just the fact that everything  looks stylish, but my chronically sore neck, overused quads, perpetually sprained ankle and occasionally stiff back all feel better when I look this good.

Not only that, but the pricing is reasonable, the fit is comfortable, the fabrics are top quality and the clothes fit great!

Here are some details on the products I’ve tried. And please note, while most of these examples are shown in pink or black, all of these clothes come in a wide variety of colors, with the exceptions of the capris.

 Women’s Performance Compression Capris

Whether I’m at the gym or on the trail, I love these capris. Available in hot pink or black, these low-rise bottoms fit snugly, but are still flattering, thanks to a wide waist band and the perfect mid-calf length.

Rated at UPF 50+, they’ll protect you from the sun, while the fabric wicks perspiration away. Indoors or out, I’ve found them just about perfect. Heck, I even won my division in a recent 5K while wearing them. Was it me or the copper?

Women’s Recovery Compression Camisole

While I’ve mostly been wearing this cami under other workout tops, it’s also a great everyday piece, or even something to wear while you sleep. The compression is snug, but not uncomfortable, designed to support your core and relieve any lingering pain and stiffness. Suitably lightweight for layering, it washes up really well.

And, if you’d rather have a bit more coverage, Tommie Copper recovery compression tops also come in a tank style, and a short- or long-sleeved V neck. There are also looser (although not super loose) Active-Fit tops that work really well layered over the compression wear.

Women’s Reversible Scarf

“A scarf?” you are wondering. Yes, a scarf. And while I don’t work out wearing this scarf (although I’d look quite rakish, I’m sure), I love this scarf for dressing up, going out and just looking a bit more put together than normal around the house.

Paired with a black sweater, I can’t go wrong. Plus, it offers warmth around my neck and relief for the perpetual stiffness that comes with too much computer time.

LOVE IT!

Compression Socks

New this season, compression socks allow you to clothe yourself in copper from top to bottom. Available in an athletic ankle style or knee socks (also in dress styles), I think they’re really comfortable and they fit snugly without being too tight or feeling small.

Plus, I can’t wait to wear the knee sock version next winter with boots.

Compression Ankle Sleeve

Much as I wish it weren’t so, I have a bad ankle. It’s been sprained, sprained again (and again) and even broken.

And, although I know I should run with an ankle support, many of them are really uncomfortable, with annoying seams in all the wrong places (like on my heel?!?).

Not so with these sleeves. Looser than an Ace wrap, these ankle sleeves are not necessarily for support so much as for recovery and relief. But, they are comfortable enough that I’ll wear them all day – on both ankles – when I feel like it.

In addition to ankle sleeves, Tommie Copper also makes sleeves for wrists, knees, elbows, calves and the core.

Would love to use the workout wear to get me ready for a warrior dash I am doing in August !

I think you’ll love it! While I’m no scientist, and I can’t guarantee the copper works, I’ve convinced myself that it does! Enjoy!

Will be giving a piece or two a try! Awesome you got to test them out..

Well, maybe sweaty is more appropriate, but I look good too and from the gym and around town!

I’m training for my first, hopefully not last, half marathon, I’d LOVE too move up to full marathons later. Even during ski season there’s times I wear compression capris under my ski pants! I’d LOVE the tommie’s! ! ! !

Good luck with your training! I’ve never taken on a run that long! You go, girl!

And great idea about ski season base layers. Tommie Copper also makes a full length tight!

Tommie Copper sounds great. As someone who just signed up for a Down and Dirty and the same week twisted her ankle and blew a ligament, I would love to try that ankle brace for training until my event in August. As you pointed out-the braces out there are either too bulky and stiff to allow you to work out or they just give you blisters. I would love to put one through it’s paces in the next few months.

Just went running with my ankle sleeve. It’s really comfortable, although it doesn’t immobilize the ankle, it gives it some more support. So sorry about your ankle. Heal fast and train hard!

I will use the clothing while I run and train for local races. I’m still working my way up to a marathon. I love compression clothes and the thought that these clothes have copper really intrigues me.

I hope this is open to Canadians too because after a particularly long, cold winter standing at the bottom of race courses I am just coming out of hibernation & am actually enjoying trail running with my dog.

      May 19, 2014 at 2:56 pm

I hear you about the long, cold winter! Yes, it is a website credit, so open to Canadians! Good luck and enjoy the time with your dog!

I am stoked to learn about this company. Those knee sleeves look like just the thing for the aches and pains of old knees and I would love a pair of capris or leggings for power walks with the dogs.

      May 19, 2014 at 2:57 pm

My ankle likes the sleeve and my neck and back like the shirts. I think your knees (strong, ski knees!) will be quite happy! Good luck!

Kristen: thanks for sharing, I’m interested to see if the capris would help support my knees for running, workouts, biking, and even snowboard/skiing. I’ve also been wanting to try compression socks for running long distances, do they help?

    • braveskimom says

      May 19, 2014 at 4:23 pm

Hi Jenn! I think they do help. I like how secure my ankle feels and I also really like the tightness around my arch. You know, I have no scientific proof that the copper works, but I do have to say I feel better when I run in the compression capris and socks than when I don’t! Crazy!

Also, you don’t have to get capris. They have tights, and shorts, too!
