Or, maybe it isn’t. I started writing this blog in late March 2009, the tail end of ski season (okay, not for you back country types, but for the rest of us.) The snow was getting soft, the sun warm and the mountain bikes were coming out of hibernation. Skiers were thinking hanging up their gear for the season and I was starting a ski blog. Good timing? I thought it was. We had been buffeted by a series of late season storms – huge powder-producing storms that turned back upon themselves and dropped inch upon inch of powder in our mountains. My family and I were certainly still thinking about skiing. And I wanted to write about skiing. But then reality hit and I began studying platforms: blogs, hubs, lenses….it got really confusing really fast. Sixteen months passed and finally on a warm, humid July day, I decided to publish something. That was yesterday.
The inspiration for this blog came from my children. Our entire family is obsessed with skiing, snow and winter. A multi-generation Colorado native, I’ve been skiing since I was three and so have my children. My oldest son, who will soon turn 14, is not only an accomplished skier but a true skiing scholar (I am using those two words together and I am not kidding). He studies skiing and knows more about the history, technology and culture of skiing than anyone else I know. When we go to a new resort, he studies the maps ahead of time, commits them to memory and quite cheerfully leads us around the mountain. Every season, we listen to him critique various runs, resorts and restaurants, movies, books, and YouTube videos. We suggested to him that he start a blog – a review of resorts and ski areas from a kid’s perspective. He didn’t bite, so I did. I made a list of all the topics I could cover from a ski mom’s perspective and decided, “why not?” I have a passion for skiing, a passion for writing and an even greater passion for my family. At the intersection of these three loves, I figured I could come up with something to say that would be meaningful to me and with a little luck it might resonate with someone else or provide someone with a useful source of information.
My goal with this blog is to be both entertaining and informative. I don’t know if it’s possible, but I would love to make this blog the go-to site on the internet for skiing families. While I am certainly not an expert on any of the topics I may cover, I have a lot of experience managing a skiing family, a number of opinions on how to make family skiing more successful and enjoyable and quite a few friends in the skiing industry whom I can call on for expert advice and perspective. I also have the opinions of both of my sons, my husband and all the moms I chat with on the chairlift. To top it off, I have honestly been called a “brave ski mom” – by a perfect stranger no less.
So, finally, here I go. The A/C is on, but it seems like the right time to go skiing. I hope you feel the same way.
(This is actually the Brave Ski Mom introductory post I wrote in March 2009. I edited it to publish in October 2009, but never did. Timing is everything, so finally here it is, edited as of yesterday.)
