Preventing Avalanches, By Triggering Them on Purpose (PBS Video)

I love snow. I associate snow with happiness, joy, an interruption of the day-to-day (snow days!), and, of course, skiing.

I’m also totally, 100% freaked out by avalanches. Having done basic avalanche training, I quickly realized that I’d be next-to-worthless if I ever had to attempt to rescue anyone. Or at least, that’s my fear – that I’d immediately forget everything I’ve been taught.

Thus, I am both super-cautious about avalanche risk and fascinated by the actions taken to prevent them and understand this powerful natural process.

Preventing Avalanches, By Triggering Them on Purpose

Today, I’m sharing an interesting 8 minute video from PBS Terra. Presented with PBS’s trademark sobriety, this isn’t a stoke-inducing ski movie. But the drone footage is gorgeous and dramatic. And there is a lot of excellent information for those who are interested in learning more about why and where snow slides.

Perhaps most surprising is the planned launch of a satellite to analyze snow pack from space. The satellite is scheduled to launch in 2022.

Enjoy!
