A Little Sabbatical. A Lot of Perspective. A Better Braveskimom.com.

My favorite family photo from this summer. Feel free to share yours, too! Thanks.

braveskimom logoA funny thing happened last winter. Actually, it wasn’t very funny and like a pebble dropped into a lake, it had repercussions far beyond what I anticipated.

The background is boring and technical. But the outcome is all good.

Facebook has long been a page view generator for braveskimom.com. But when Facebook changed their algorithm in mid-January to downgrade pages (including blogs and websites), Facebook went from being a fun place to share information with a fantastic community of over 2000 people, to a time-sucking pain.

After months of working with other fantastic writers and bloggers to rebuild the reach of our social content, I gave up. I went on sabbatical.

Making It Fun Again

what-I-enjoy-about-blogging-and-what-I-don'tOver the summer, I remembered some things I’d forgotten. First, I remembered that I enjoy being a mom, skiing, writing and genuine social media interaction. I do not enjoy “gaming” social media, the pressure to continually update my website design and the growing emphasis on Search Engine Optimization (SEO) over quality content.

So this winter, I’m going to what I enjoy and no longer worry about the rest.

While it’s only September, here’s what you can look forward to during the winter.

Money-Saving Tips. Skiing and snowboarding can be ridiculously expensive. I don’t like to pay full price for anything — ski gear, ski tickets and ski vacations, included. I will continue sharing our best money-saving strategies.

Family Skiing. When I started Braveskimom it was to answer the many, many questions families have about learning to ski, where to ski, how to ski, keeping their kids interested, and so on. These posts won’t just be for beginners and small children, but will focus on advice, information, tips and inspiration for families of all ages.

Travel. Last season, we were fortunate to have some amazing skiing experiences. I’ll share some of these, along with our best tips for other families visiting these resorts and ski areas.

Ski Fashion. Ski fashion updates and giveaways from WinterWomen.com and WinterKids.com will continue, along with other gear updates and features as appropriate.

Stuff About Skiing That I Enjoy. This is my catch-all category. I don’t know what I will cover here, but I hope you enjoy it, too.

If you have topics you’d like me to cover, please let me know! I love getting suggestions and questions from readers.

Looking forward to sharing the winter with you.

—Kristen

BraveSkiMom is one of the best ski blogs on the web, and I know whatever you decide to post, it’s going to be well written, entertaining, and extremely informative! Thanks for all you do.
