I don’t know if they have Groundhog Day in England.
Somehow, given the holiday’s roots in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, I doubt it.
Still, today seems like an appropriate day for this children’s book giveaway. After all, it’s not every day you read a book about a skiing marmot.
Monty Goes Skiing by Richard Liddle
Monty Goes Skiing is the first book by British ski instructor and author Richard Liddle.
A really cute picture book that combines illustrations with photos in a kid-friendly collage sort of way, Monty Goes Skiing is the story of a Monty (a marmot) and Mortimer (a young English boy on his first ski holiday).
Liddle’s goal is to introduce young skiers to the “wonderful world of skiing,” using phrases and terminology they will encounter in ski school.
In this book, young Mortimer learns the rudiments of what to wear, renting equipment (including a helmet!), sliding on snow, reading a ski map, and moving downhill in a pizza slice-shaped snowplow (or snowplough, in British English).
Practice is emphasized, but not at the expense of fun.
Even when Mortimer inevitably crashes, he’s not hurt, bounces back up and tries skiing again. He has so much fun that he earns his first “Marmot Award” before going home for tea and cake.

Well, I love marmots and also skiing! Seriously I’d love to read this book to my daughter. I haven’t seen many skiing books other than one about ski hill heavy equipment (a la Thomas the Train)

I love marmots too! They are so cheeky — and cute! And while I have to say I like ski hill heavy equipment (I’m the mom of boys), I can totally see why your daughter might prefer an adorable furry creature. Plus, the girl skiers in this book rock! Good luck!

I LOVE marmots. My fav. mountain animal hands down. I hear that they have been known to lick hikers’ legs before for the salt that comes from sweat I guess. This is my dream – to be licked by a marmot!
braveskimom says
That is so funny! Make sure you get a photo when you do get licked by a marmot! Thanks!

Also, I like/follow you on Twitter, FB, and pretty much everywhere! 😉

This book looks awesome!! We took my two-year-old skiing for the first time last weekend, and there were moments of joy, and moments of tears. Anything I can do to show her the fun and joy in skiing (like reading about Monty) would be a big plus!
braveskimom says
I hear you. Those alternating moments of bliss and despair can be taxing. If a cute Marmot helps, all the better! Good luck!

Girls would love to read about Monty the marmot and Mortimer skiing adventures. Hopefully keep my youngest attention on art of skiing and not boy ski instructors.
braveskimom says
Ah, girls and boys! Good luck with that!
