If you read yesterday’s post, you know that last week I attended a half-day session at the Carmichael Training Systems facility in Colorado Springs. This event was sponsored by Eucerin as part of their Eucerin Skin First Movement initiative.
Last year, Eucerin launched the Skin First Movement to help educate people on the relationship of healthy skin to overall health and wellness. As our largest organ, the skin is the body’s first line of defense against infections, germs and pollutants. A two-way barrier, healthy skin keeps out harmful external elements, while keeping in essential moisture. The problem is that very few of us adults have healthy skin.
Make Healthy Skin A Priority
On average, more than one-half of our lifetime UV exposure occurs before we are twenty. And, as I know only too well, taking care of my skin as an adult (sunscreen, moisturizer, wearing a hat) hasn’t been enough to prevent me from getting skin cancer. I am becoming good friends with my dermatologist!
This doesn’t mean that it is too late to have healthy skin, even if we sustained damage as children. Rather, Eucerin is encouraging American women to think of skin care as a health care, rather than cosmetic, issue. Schedule that yearly skin check with a dermatologist. Use sunscreen on a daily and habitual basis. Choose the proper products for your skin type and put your Skin First. Visit the Eucerin Skin First website and join the over 170,000 people who have signed a pledge to take care of their skin.
Dean Karnazes’ Run Across America
So that is the “skin” part of what Eucerin is doing. What about the running? As part of the Skin First Movement, Eucerin is a sponsor, along with Live! With Regis and Kelly and Walgreen’s, of ultra-marathoner Dean Karnazes’ Run Across America. Dean began running in California on February 25th and is currently in New Mexico, averaging between 40-50 miles per day as he makes his way to New York City where he will finish in the Live! With Regis and Kelly studios.
Dean’s goal is to challenge Americans to get up, get active and get healthy. Proceeds from his run are being donated to Action for Healthy Kids to reduce childhood obesity and undernourishment (yes, those two can, and often do, go hand-in-hand).
Eucerin On The Road
In support of his effort, Eucerin has taken their show on the road in the Eucerin Skin First Bus and is hosting running and health-related events in cities across the country. Along with the bus come a team of skin health experts and the Eucerin Skin First Ambassador, Sara Kate Gillingham-Ryan. Sara Kate is the Founder and Editor of Apartment Therapy’s TheKitchn.com and a food writer. The next event is in Indianapolis, at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on April 17.
As for me, well, as someone who lives in a harsh climate (Can you say too much sun, too much aridity and too much altitude?) I am always looking for ways to better protect my skin. I’m not going to give up skiing or living outdoors as much as I can, so I had better take care of my skin. Unless I want to end up looking older than I am (and who wants that?!), I had better put my skin first!

When my family is on vacation and planning a FULL day in the sun, we apply our sunscreen before breakfast, making sure that it absorbs into our skin for at least 30 minutes before going to the pool/beach. It definitely makes a difference (for us) to have that first application “set” into the skin. We continue with frequent sunscreen applications and have survived relatively burn free!

Sunscreen first thing in the morning (or maybe 2nd) whether or not you are planning to be outside. That way, you don’t end up under the sun sans sunscreen.

I live in the Pacific Northwest, where we don’t see much of the sun. However, even on cloudy days, you still get exposure to UV rays. So all you Northwesterners, (or anyone else who lives in a wet, cloudy climate) if you’re going to be outside for a long period of time, put on the sunscreen!

I try to use a moisturizer after the shower – its dry here, so my skin needs it, and it helps with the air pollution too! yea city living!

Love living in Colorado, but hate the dry hands I get!
I slather on Eucerin and wear cotton gloves to bed. I always use the old school original Eucerin, on the advice of my Pharmacist hubby. Yes, when you have a Pharmacist at home, you ask important medical questions like what to do about dry hands.
And, if my hands are super bad, I will put on a ton of Eucerin and then use my paraffin wax dipper, put plastic bags on my hand and then put on the big spa gloves over that. I sit for a half hour or so and then peel off. Very moisturizing…something about the heated wax just zaps the moisture down into my skin.

our woodstove dries my skin out. I always use a thick creme on my feet, with socks at night and use chapstick on my fingertips and cuticles b/c they get the brunt of the outside wear and tear in the cold.
