When I heard the phrase “Skin First” being used by Eucerin a few weeks ago, I thought to myself, “Yeah, that makes sense.” Our skin is our first line of defense against illness, infection, contamination and aging. Why would anyone not want to put their Skin First?
And then I remembered being a kid. Sunburns, sunburns, sunburns. My parents tried to put sunscreen on us. And often they succeeded. But the products that were available often weren’t really that good and didn’t cover the full spectrum of UV rays. Add that to the fact that we didn’t usually reapply and we were often under the misconception that a burn would actually provide a “healthy” base for a lasting suntan. Now that I am older and wiser, I think to myself “How stupid was that?”
And then I thought of my own kids who really don’t like to wear sunscreen. It can be sticky. It can be greasy. Who cares about a little sunburn every once in a while? (Answer: Your Mom Does.)
Finally, I thought about my own life and daily routine. Busy, busy, busy. And yes, there are times when it just seems like a hassle to put on sunscreen to go walk to the dog. I’ve already put on moisturizer, so why would I want to bother with yet one more product (even though I know I should).
While Skin First sounds like an obvious goal (like eating more vegetables), maybe making skin protection a priority really is a radical idea: Something that will change the way we think about skin care and our health.
Sorting Through Sunscreens
A few weeks ago, I published a post on sunscreen titled The Skinny on Sunscreen. In this post, I discussed the importance of blocking both UVA and UVB rays, as well as the importance of finding products which contain physical sunblock such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. I also reviewed a number of good sunscreen products. Today, while I am not going to rehash the previous post, I do have a review of two more products and a giveaway!
Eucerin Everyday Protection SPF 15 Body Lotion: An everyday moisturizer with SPF 15 and titanium dioxide, I was interested in how this lotion would go on. Would it feel like most sunscreens — kind of like a coating on the skin or would it rub in weightlessly and feel like it had disappeared (that is what I was hoping for). Having used it for a couple of days, I think the answer is somewhere in the middle. It is not as heavy or thick as a sunscreen, but it is slightly “stickier” than a straight lotion (for example, Eucerin Daily Skin Balance).
But here is the kicker: This lotion has physical sunblock that is light and highly effective. While I will still use a sunblock for extended or intense sun exposure, this daily lotion offers great protection for running around town, walking the dog for 1/2 an hour and al fresco mid-day dining with friends (yeah, I wish…).
Everyday Protection SPF 30 Face Lotion: Four words: I love this moisturizer! I tried it for the first time 3 weeks ago, before I knew I would be getting a sample to review. I like the way it goes on, hydrates my skin and blends in. As if that weren’t enough, it is SPF 30, with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. For a daily use moisturizer with SPF, I don’t think it can be beat. Best of all, it comes in a pump bottle, so it is easy to control the amount you need and nothing goes to waste.
Why Use a Daily Sunscreen?
Now just in case you need a reminder, you want to wear a daily sunblock because sun damage to your skin now can cause problems later. UVA rays penetrate the top layers of the skin (the epidermis) and can penetrate down into the lower layers (the dermis). These lower layers are made up of a thick network of collagen and connective tissues. They hold in moisture and provide a foundation for healthy, firm skin. When the dermis if damaged by prolonged sun exposure and UVA rays, the collagen breaks down, moisture escapes and guess what? You’ve got wrinkles.
UVB rays are the primary cause of sunburn and skin cancer. While you can’t immediately see or feel the damage caused by UVA rays, the UVB rays will let you know immediately that you’ve screwed up.
Using a broad-spectrum skin care product with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide will give you the best protection you can get right now, aside from dressing like your great-grandmother when you go to the beach. Full-spectrum daily sunscreen versus full-body “bathing costume?” Seems like an easy choice to me. And not really so radical after all.

After your bath or shower everyday to keep the moisture in put your moisturizer on right afterward. It helps keeps your skin moist and silky. My mom and I have been doing this for years and years. I am 55 and she is 83.

Eucerin Everyday Protection lotion is great! I love lotion that has sun protection built right in, since I’m always putting lotion on. The face lotion is especially great in the winter, when my face always gets dry but when no one really thinks to put sunscreen on.

Most of us probably apply some kind of facial lotion or body lotion right after a morning shower. Every time I use any of Eucerin’s line of lotions, I’ve been so pleased with how it locks in moisture and helps me avoid the dryness and itchiness I feel if I don’t use lotion. Eucerin Everyday Protection sunblock provides the additional benefit of protecting skin from harmful UV exposure. Instead of some other moisturizer, why not just apply Eucerin sunblock each morning? It won’t take any additional time compared to what most of us already do to start off our day. And if we plan to go out later in the day, it may be useful to carry a small container of it in your backpack or purse, so you can enjoy the sun instead of scrambling for shade or guiltily thinking, “Oh no, I forgot to put on sunscreen before I left!”
Alex says
I already use face and body lotion daily, but it doesn’t offer me any protection. This would be great because I could have an SPF lotion without changing my routine!
Sherry Nettleton says
I find after having skin cancer the best tip I can give is to make applying sunscreen a part of your daily regiment. I apply mine every morning while getting ready for the day. I keep it on the bathroom counter and after brushing my teeth and washing my face I immediately apply my facial sunscreen/

Love how Eucerin makes my skin feel and protects it from the sun too. WOW
Condo Blues says
I always apply lotion after showering. However I don’t always apply sunscreen later in the day when I go out and about. This way it’s one less thing to remember to do, or in my case, forget.

You can’t go wrong with Eucerin body or facial lotion. It gives your skin back the moisture that the environment takes out everyday and gives you a better looking complexion and body all around.
Sue Boyer says
I’m a nurse and many of the dermatologists and other doctors would prescribe Eucerin cream for my patients. I now have a clinic and use it for them there as well. It is good to apply eucerin cream right after you get out of the shower and dry off to seal in some of the moisture already on your skin.
Crystal says
I love this stuff! Eucerin is always handy for me. Sitting on the sink in my bathroom neatly is the spf 15 and spf 30. If im needing a little tan, pr it’s during the winter months where i need little protection, i just apply the spf 15. If i’m good to go and don’t want to tan i’ll just use the spf 30 for the most protection against the sun rays. It’s a quick and easy routine, and every morning after i jump out of the shower, it’s always there within reach.
Tara says
It will help keep you from getting skin cancer and protect you from sun damage effects such as wrinkles and sun spots.

I love that Eucerin has sunscreen in it. I spend a lot of time outdoors, and since I am between fair and medium skin, I tend to burn easily. Having a quality product that will help me protect my skin from the sun and moisturize is perfect!
Christine Domyanic says
Well I am out in the sun a lot gardening and as a part of my morning routine I use the SPF 30. It is light on my skin. I use it on my face under my powder. I don’t want sun spots and protection is important to me as I am 37. I don’t look my age and I attribute that to the sun protection that I get from Eucerin.
Sonia Opperman says
Steps to Success ! Shower, moisturize with SPF, brush teeth, hair & make-up. Just my everyday routine, after my shower I moisturize from head to toe. I love Eucerin products as they are excellent quality ingredients and provide the moisture I need to keep my skin healthy. Spf is like the royalty of moisturizing. We need to protect our skin from sun damage & ageing. It is so easy to follow a schedule when you do it every day as I have for years. Thank you Eucerin for your wonderful products.

I am 57…my skin (all over) clearly shows my ‘sun tanning’ abuse…but around 35 I finally saw the light! Replenishing my skins moisture with a lotion with sun screen is the way to go! I can now enjoy all my outside activities, year ’round, knowing my skin is protected…thank you.
Julie Witt says
I spend a LOT of time out in the sun in the summertime, and I get such awful dry skin as a result of it. Eucerin with sunblock takes care of both problems at once! Eucerin is my favorite lotion to use all over to begin with, but when I know I am going to be out in the sun, I pull out the Eucerin with sunblock and use that! Win-win!!
Emily says
All of my children have sensitive skin and we have tried many lotions to help with dryness. Eucerin Everyday Lotion is the only one we found that kids could use daily. It absorbs in quickly and doesn’t feel greasy. It is also SPF 15, which is great for when I forgot to put some sunscreen on them. A little protection is better than none at all.
Kathryn Gritts says
My dermatologist turned me on to Eucerin several years ago and I love it! I have very fair skin and have had several very bad sunburns in my life. Now past 50, I know that I need to really take care of my skin. Eucerin helps me do that. I see my dermatologist for a screening at least once a year and use Eucerin every day.
Helen Lee says
unlike many brands, Eucerin molds to you – you don’t mold to it. it feels soft, organic and not hard, plast-icky. you’ll love it!!!!!
meredith says
Eucerin everyday skin protection would help me remember to use SPF everyday, b/c its one step, gentle on my skin and would protect me from lots of UV damage.
Linda Williams says
I use a daily moisturizer on my face that also contains sunscreen. That way I know whatever I do during the day, my face will be protected.
Dorene King says
I tried a sample of Eucerin Everyday Protection SPF 30 Face Lotion a few months ago. I couldn’t believe that I had finally found a face cream that moisturized my dry skin, kept my facial skin moist for hours and was not just layer of oil sitting on my face and pooling in the folds creases. I had received two samples of other popular brands and their results couldn’t compare to the results I had with Eucerin. It slides on and makes my facial skin look and feel so soft and smooth! I also have had squamous cell skin cancer surgically removed from my face (temples, forehead and the tip of my nose) several times as a result of all those sunburns I had as a child and the 7 years I spent in Hawaii serving my country in the United States Navy. I have rough patches on light Irish skin that is now 56 years old. I apply Eucerin before I apply my foundation. It definitely improves the application and my face doesn’t dry out during the day Seriously, haven’t we all tried several different skin products? Lured by the promises of beautiful women in magazines, behind cosmetic counters in finer stores, and home-based cosmetic “classes”? I don’t usually respond or make many on-line comments but because I was so very satisfied with Eucerin I just had to share my experience. Peace to all!

Shortening the daily skin care regime by adding SPF to moisturizing is the best. I trust sunscreen on my face when it’s in a face moisturizer that’s trustworthy.
Leah Allen says
Eucerin everyday protection SPF15 and SPF 30 lotion are very easy to use especially after getting out of the shower when you skin is still damp to soak in the moisture. It’s important to take daily care of your skin, so you can avoid, age spots, cancer, and dryness of your skin.
Joanne says
I have used the SPF 30 face lotion now for a long time and will never switch to anything else. Goes on great and gives me confidence my face is protected for the day! I lived in the tropics for many years and know I was exposed to far more sun than I should have been, not using much of any protection back then…so I want to do the best I can now that I’m “wiser.”
Tara says
Eucerin lotion with SPF is easy to use and works well to keep me from getting sunburned or just damage from the sun in general.
betsy cortez says
Eucerin is a great moisturizer to have sunscreen protection in it is a real bonus. We are all very fair in my family so skin cancer is problem which makes sunscreen a must. My mom and one of my daughters are redheads while my other daughter, my son, my husband and I are blonds. So a daily sunscreen is a must. I prefer using moisturizers with sunscreen in them to cut down on the number of products we have to put on.
Jennifer P says
You can’t make it much easier to keep your skin moisturized & protected from the sun at the same time. My daughter uses Aquaphor everyday for her eczema so Eucerin is a brand I trust!!
Jean Dillon says
I found the SPF30 Facial Lotion in a couple of stores. After using it, I think it’s great as an under foundation sunscreen. Since it becomes invisible, I also like to put it on first thing in the morning and feel safe to walk the dog and run some errands without any other layer.
Belle says
I’m new to this product; and have been using Cetaphil all the time. Currently having breakouts and planning to change to Eucerin..Do I have to put any other moisturizer before applying Eucerin SPF 30?Or after washing my face..toned it and directly apply the SPF Lotion??
braveskimom says
I just wash, use the SPF and go. But then, I’m lazy and usually in a hurry! So far, so good however and my skin gets much less sun this way. Thanks for asking!
